US Highway 89 (Part 3)
Grand Teton National Park is traversed from north to south by US Highway 89, covering 46 miles from the North Entrance to the South Entrance. We cover this road in three sections. Part 3 runs from the Snake River Overlook to the South Entrance. It is covered below. For the previous part, from Jackson Lake Junction to the Snake River Overlook, see US Highway 89 Part 2.
Mile 33.2 – Teton Point Turnout
On the right is the Teton Point Turnout. This viewpoint has the Teton Range front and center, with a wooded meadow as the foreground.
Mile 35.3 – Glacier View Turnout
The road passes by the Glacier View Turnout on the right. This viewpoint provides a good, albeit distant view of a good-sized glacier of the Teton Range.
Mile 37.3 – Blacktail Ponds Overlook
The parking area for Blacktail Ponds Overlook is on the right. This beautiful vista point puts the Blacktail Ponds and its green surrounding vegetation in front of the Teton Range.
Mile 37.5 – Antelope Flats Road
The unpaved Antelope Flats Road heads off to the left.
Mile 38.7 – Moose Junction
The road arrives at Moose Junction. To the right is the start of the Teton Park Road, which provides access to the most popular areas of the park. Straight ahead is the continuation of US Highway 89.
Mile 40.0 – Albright View Turnout
The Albright View Turnout is on the right. This viewpoint gives a slightly more distant view of the main Teton Range, with a large sagebrush flat in the front.
Mile 42.3 – Jackson Hole Airport
The access road to Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) is on the right. This commercial airport is unique in the National Park System, as it lies completely within the park boundaries and is operated under contract with the NPS. Major airlines including Delta, United, and American all operate flights seasonally to this airport.
Mile 44.3 – Gros Ventre Junction
To the right from this intersection is the Gros Ventre Road, which follows along the river and also provides access to the large Gros Ventre Campground, shown to the left. For more on the campground, see Grand Teton Camping.
Mile 46.3 – Park Boundary
US Highway 89 leaves the park at the southern boundary.
